Selection of pipe material for water transmission mains in challenging terrains requires careful consideration of both technical and environmental factors. This paper offers a detailed framework, based on qualitative and quantitative analyses, for selecting the optimal pipe material based on the unique demands of constructing water infrastructure in mountainous regions. Four commonly used pipe materials were evaluated: Ductile Iron Pipe (AWWA C150), Steel (AWWA C200), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC AWWA C900), and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE AWWA M55), focusing on their suitability for the rugged conditions of the project area. Emphasis was given on critical factors such as soil conditions, pressure demands, varying terrain, installation methods, and long-term maintenance concerns, providing insights into how these considerations were applied to this project in the Uncompahgre Valley (Montrose, Colorado). The findings aim to assist engineers facing similar environmental and technical challenges in the future.
