The Cut is a mile long corridor of cut slopes and steep eroding ground along Highway 82 in Pitkin County, Colorado, from elevations of 11,600 to 12,000 feet, near Independence Pass. The site lies within the core of the Sawatch Range in Precambrian rock terraces. Glacial morphology, geologic conditions, poor early road cut design, and climate set the stage for the existing stability problems. Continuing erosion and detrimental maintenance procedures have created degraded environmental conditions and rock slide hazards. In 1996 and 1997 the Indepemdemce Pass Foundation and the Colorado Department of Transportation implemented and shared costs in a rockfall mitigation and prototype slope reconstruction, restoration, and revegetation project at the Top Cut. The successes experinced during this project have led to larger, more ambitious, projects planned for the future.
