<p>This map is a soil moisture proxy derived from analysis of the UG 1m hydrologically corrected digital elevation model. The intuition behind this map is that areas that have flat topography and are near the elevation of local streams are likely to have high soil moisture. This index builds on the work of Nobre, A. D., Cuartas, L. A., Hodnett, M., Rennó, C. D., Rodrigues, G., Silveira, A., & Saleska, S. (2011). Height Above the Nearest Drainage–a hydrologically relevant new terrain model. Journal of Hydrology, 404(1-2), 13-29. </p><p>The map was generated with a multi-step procedure. First, a binary map of streams was generated from the 1m DEM using the GRASS GIS r.waterhsed module with a multi-flow-direction algorithm. Then the SAGA GIS module "Height Above Stream Network" was used to interpolate stream elevations and subtract from terrain elevations, producing a map of the vertical distance above the nearest stream. This procedure was repeated 4 times with different flow accumulation thresholds for defining the stream network (8k, 32k, 128k, and 512k squre meters), and the resulting height above stream maps were averaged to get a multiscale height above stream measure. This map was then combined with an estimate of local slope to get the toographic index I, defined as: </p><p>ln(1/(H + 5) + 1.1) / (S + 50) </p><p>where H is the height above local streams and S is the local slope. The resulting map was scaled to the range 0 to 1.</p>
