This is a map of temporal variability in accumulated snow-free freezing potential (freezing degree days, FDD) for the Upper Gunnison domain, derived from daily minimum temperature maps interpolated from weather station and microclimate sensor data combined with Landsat-derived estimates of the timing of seasonal snowpack departure and onset. The original daily maps are also available. Snow-free freezing degree-days were accumulated in the 60 days after the dissapearance of seasonal snowpack. In the absence of snow, the accumulation period started on day-of-year 60 (March 1st in a non-leap year). To compute freezing degree days, daily estimates of temperatures below -5 degrees Celcius (considered harmful to most plants) were summed across all days estimated to be free of snow cover and multiplied by negative 1. Because snowpack insulates the ground surface and soil from low temperatures, this estimate can be a more appropriate measure of freezing potential for snow-dominated climates. This map represents the mean of annual values computed from 2002 to 2021. Estimates from individual years are also available.
