GPDs, Percentage of individuals still in the natal coterie territory at different ages, 29 July 2026 OLDFile name: Fig 22.4. GPDs. Percentage of individuals still in the natal territory at different ages, 22 April 2025 The number above each bar in graph indicates the number of individuals still living at the home colony-site for each age For GPD ages 1 through 3, P < 0.001 for all interspecific differences (2x2 chi-square test). For GPD age-4, P = 0.007 for interspecific differences (Fisher exact test). Long-lived prairie dogs appear in this figure multiple times. A prairie dog that was still in the natal territory as a 3-year old, for example, was ALSO still in the natal territory as a 2-year old and as a 1-year old. The number above each bar indicates the sample size for each age. Note that numbers here and in Fig 22.4 are for PERCENTAGES These data used for Fig 22.4 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 22 April 2025. Gunnison data are from the study-colony at Petrified Forest National Park only, because that is the only GPD colony I studied for >=7 years. GPD Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC, studied in 2013 through 2016) was at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP). GPD Visitor Center Colony (VCC, studied in 2017 and 2018) was also at VCNP. GPD colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was studied from 1989 through 1995. All data for this EXCEL file and Fig 22.4 checked TWO TIMES (22 April 2025 and 23 July 2026). Information in this EXCEL file and Fig 22.4 comes from SUMMARIES of data over many years. Raw data for these summaries are in my field notes. This graph is identical to Fig 5 (page 247) in the following reference: Hoogland JL. 1999. Philopatry, dispersal, and social organization of Gunnison's prairie dogs. Journal of Mammalogy 80:243-251. This figure shows that long-term philopatry for GPDs was common for females, but rare for males. Age in this EXCEL file and Fig 22.4 = years since first emergence from the natal burrow entrance No GPD males were still alive at the study colony beyond 4 years. See Fig 11.9. No GPD females were still alive at the study colony beyond 6 years. See Fig 11.9. Percentage = <.> means no data. All data on philopatry in this EXCEL file and in Fig 22.4 are from prairie dogs that remained at the study-colony. For Fig 22.4, I have no information on prairie dogs that dispersed long-distance away from the study-colony. File name = Fig 22.4.
