Method synopsis

Controlled playback experiments using modified alarm calls to test receiver behavioral responses to different acoustic features including added noise and nonlinear phenomena.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 7 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Nonlinear phenomena in marmot alarm calls: a mechanism encoding fear? (2025), Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. The protocol was originally introduced by Behavioral responses of white-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys) to synthesized nonlinear phenomena (2012). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Conduct playback experiments
Playback experiments were conducted by placing a handful of favoured food (Omalene 300 Purina horse feed) within 1 m of an active burrow with hidden speaker within 10 m. Normal alarm calls and manipulated calls (with added noise or silence) were played back while recording behavioral responses.
Quantities: Multiple playback trials per treatmentDuration: Baseline period before playback, response measurement period afterConditions: Near active marmot burrows
Equipment: hidden speakers, Omalene 300 Purina horse feed, video recording equipment

Typical Equipment

• hidden speakers
• Omalene 300 Purina horse feed
• video recording equipment

Output Measurements

• behavioral response measures
• foraging time allocation
• vigilance behaviors
