Method synopsis

Weekly monitoring of alpine plant flowering phenology coupled with snowmelt date recording to assess environmental effects on plant reproductive timing. Focuses on species-specific responses to fine-scale environmental heterogeneity.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 18 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Linking microenvironment modification to species interactions and demography in an alpine plant community (2023), Oikos. The protocol was originally introduced by Barriers to Gene Flow across a Light Gradient in Cardamine cordifolia. (2015). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Establish permanent study plots
Set up fifty 2×2 m permanent plots organized in a 5×10 array on a southeast-oriented ridgeline with ~20° slope. Plots marked with white string boundaries visible in photographs.
   Quantities: 50 plots, each 2×2 m, arranged in 5×10 arrayDuration: Initial setup in 2014, maintained through 2019Conditions: Southeast-oriented ridgeline, ~20° slope, ~3540 m elevation
Equipment: white string for plot boundaries
2. Conduct demographic census
Track all individuals (>2300) of 18 species occurring on plots. Map plant locations using x-y coordinates and measure maximum length for each individual. Record survival, growth, and fecundity annually.
Quantities: Over 2300 individuals of 18 species tracked annuallyDuration: Annual census from 2014 to 2019 (6 years)Conditions: During growing season (snow cover typically October to June)
Equipment: measuring devices for plant dimensions
3. Calculate vegetative overlap
Map each individual at site using x-y coordinates. Model each plant as circular polygon with diameter equal to maximum length measured in field. Calculate cumulative overlap for each instance of overlap between individuals using polygon geometry. Determine inter- and intraspecific percent overlap as proxies for microenvironment modification.
