Method synopsis

Time-series analysis of Landsat and Sentinel satellite imagery to determine seasonal snow disappearance dates using Normalized Difference Snow Index with interpolation algorithms to fill temporal gaps.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 10 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Intercomparison, interpretation, and assessment of spring phenology in North America estimated from remote sensing for 1982 to 2006 (2009), Global Change Biology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Assemble cryospheric/hydrologic data
Collected data for snow cover, soil thaw, lake ice dynamics, and spring hydrology including date of initial snow melt, microwave-detected soil thaw dates, lake ice breakup dates, and spring snowmelt onset and center of flow timing from streamflow records.
Quantities: Multiple cryospheric and hydrologic datasets covering North AmericaDuration: Overlapping periods with 1982-2006 study timeframeConditions: Continental scale coverage where data available
Equipment: Multiple sensors for snow cover, microwave detection for soil thaw, streamflow records
2. Conduct intercomparison analysis
Calculated correlations between SOS estimates from different methods, assessed average day-of-year estimates and standard deviations by ecoregion, and evaluated retrieval rates (successful SOS estimation) across methods and geographic regions.
Quantities: All possible pairwise method comparisons, 15 level 1 ecoregions analyzedDuration: Full 1982-2006 analysis periodConditions: Statistical analysis of processed satellite estimates
   Equipment: Statistical analysis software
