Method synopsis

Continuous measurement of soil CO2 concentrations at multiple depths using automated sensors to calculate soil CO2 fluxes via gradient approach. Includes soil temperature and moisture monitoring for environmental context.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 35 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Context dependence of warming induced shifts in montane soil microbial functions (2024), Functional Ecology. The protocol was originally introduced by Direct and Indirect Consequences of Climate Change on Net Ecosystem Exchange. (2015). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Measure soil respiration
Soil respiration was measured weekly using a LI-COR 6400XT with 10-cm-diameter soil respiration chamber with above-ground-living plant material removed.
Quantities: 10 cm diameter chamber, weekly measurementsDuration: Weekly throughout growing seasonConditions: Above-ground plant material removed before measurement
   Equipment: LI-COR 6400XT, 10-cm-diameter soil respiration chamber
