Method synopsis

Processing of Landsat NDVI time series to quantify foresummer drought sensitivity as the slope of peak NDVI versus June Palmer Drought Severity Index. Represents plant productivity responses to early growing season drought conditions.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Model and remote-sensing-guided experimental design and hypothesis generation for monitoring snow-soil–plant interactions (2024), Frontiers in Water. The protocol was originally introduced by Satellite-derived foresummer drought sensitivity of plant productivity in Rocky Mountain headwater catchments: spatial heterogeneity and geological-geomorphological control (2020), Environmental Research Letters. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Spatial data layer extraction for hillslope features
Average of all spatial layers computed within each hillslope to capture characteristics or spatial patterns of snow, soil, and plant signatures. Extracted elevation, net potential radiation, growing-season soil moisture, maximum snow depth, snow-free timing, and drought sensitivity for each hillslope.
Quantities: Six primary variables extracted for each of 125 hillslopes, with 30m resolution grid dataDuration: Not specifiedConditions: Applied to multiple data layers including USGS GSFLOW simulation outputs
Equipment: USGS GSFLOW model, Landsat imagery, LiDAR data

Typical Equipment

• Landsat imagery
• USGS data processing

Output Measurements
