Method synopsis

Short-term incubation of caddisfly larvae in filtered pond water to measure nitrogen and phosphorus excretion rates under ambient conditions. Five larvae per species were incubated for one hour in shade with water samples collected before and after for nutrient analysis.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Consequences of climate-induced range expansions on multiple ecosystem functions (2023), Communications Biology. The protocol was originally introduced by High interspecific variation in nutrient excretion within a guild of closely related caddisfly species (2018), Ecosphere. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Functional trait measurements
Species-specific nitrogen and phosphorus excretion rates and detritus processing rates were measured in controlled laboratory experiments using field-collected larvae.
Quantities: Measurements conducted for 6 caddisfly species totalDuration: Laboratory experiments conducted on collected specimensConditions: Controlled laboratory conditions
