Method synopsis

Colony sites are visited daily starting April 19th each year to record the first emergence date of individual marmots from hibernation through direct observation and sign detection.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Heritable variation in the timing of emergence from hibernation (2020), Evolutionary Ecology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Daily emergence monitoring
Starting April 19th each year, colony sites were visited daily weather permitting. Sites were approached on foot and scanned with binoculars and spotting scopes. Observers looked for signs of emergence including tracks in snow, dug out hibernacula, and direct sightings of marmot activity. Percentage snow cover at each colony was recorded based on observed home range size from previous summer.
Quantities: Up to 16 different marmot colony sites monitored annually, 901 emergence dates recorded for 516 individuals over 14 yearsDuration: Daily from April 19th through emergence season each year for 14 years (2003-2018)Conditions: Weather permitting, early spring conditions with variable snow cover
   Equipment: binoculars, spotting scopes
