Method synopsis

Statistical method using continuous two-phase models to identify the age at which body mass growth stabilizes at adult levels in golden-mantled ground squirrels.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 8 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Causes and consequences of pre-hibernation body mass in golden-mantled ground squirrels (Callospermophilus lateralis) (2022). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Growth curve construction
Constructed age-specific growth curves for known-aged males and females using body masses recorded 1-15 June for squirrels ≥1 year old and within 2 days of emergence for juveniles. Conducted change point analysis using R package chngpt with continuous two-phase model to identify age at which growth stabilized at adult body mass.
Quantities: Mass data from 1-15 June for ≥1 year old, within 2 days of emergence for juvenilesDuration: Early season measurements (1-15 June) annuallyConditions: Early active season before substantial mass gain
Equipment: scale accurate to 1 g, R software, chngpt package

Typical Equipment

• R software
• chngpt package

Output Measurements

• age at adult mass
• growth trajectory parameters
