Method synopsis

Comprehensive measurement of multiple fitness components including survival, reproductive success, fecundity, and growth rates to assess life history trade-offs under resource stress.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 2 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Resource availability alters fitness trade-offs: implications for evolution in stressful environments (2020), American Journal of Botany. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Fitness measurement - survival
Recorded survival to the end of 20-week experiment as binary variable. Measured as whether individuals survived the complete experimental period.
Quantities: Binary survival data for all 1209 initial plantsDuration: Assessed at end of 20-week experimentConditions: Final greenhouse assessment
   Equipment: plant identification tags
2. Fitness measurement - reproduction probability
Quantified probability of reproduction as binary variable indicating whether a plant successfully fruited. Measured fecundity among individuals that reproduced as number of mature siliques (fruits) per individual.
Quantities: Binary reproductive success and fruit counts for reproducing individualsDuration: Assessed at reproductive maturityConditions: Post-flowering greenhouse conditions
Equipment: counting equipment for fruit enumeration
3. Fitness measurement - growth rate
Measured relative growth rate (RGR) calculated from initial and final leaf lengths as: (ln Final leaf length - ln Initial leaf length)/Elapsed time in months. Initial and final leaf lengths measured to quantify individual growth performance.
Quantities: Leaf length measurements at start and end of experiment for growth rate calculation

Typical Equipment

• plant identification tags
