Method synopsis

Bumble bee competition levels are experimentally manipulated in controlled flight cage environments by varying the number of conspecific and heterospecific co-visitors while recording focal bee foraging behavior.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Competition for nectar resources does not affect bee foraging tactic constancy (2020), Ecological Entomology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Conduct controlled competition experiments
For B. flavifrons visiting C. caseana, conducted experiments inside large flight cage (2.4 x 3.1 x 2.1 m) containing individual C. caseana plants with approximately 500-1000 open flowers. Manipulated hetero-specific co-visitor density using Bombus appositus as non-robbing legitimate visitors. Created experimental treatments with 0, 1, 3, or 5 conspecific or hetero-specific foragers.
Quantities: Flight cage 2.4 x 3.1 x 2.1 m, plants with 500-1000 flowers each, treatments with 0, 1, 3, or 5 co-visitorsDuration: Individual experimental trials, multiple replicates conductedConditions: Controlled environment within flight cage, during 2015 and 2016 field seasons
Equipment: large flight cage, WeatherPort Shelter Systems Delta Colorado

Typical Equipment

• large flight cage
• WeatherPort Shelter Systems Delta Colorado
