Waiting for the snow to melt…
The Colorado mountains include a mineral belt containing molybdenum, which is only slightly more common than gold. The Henderson Mine, which was built in the mid-1960s, was the largest private sector capital investment ever made in the State of Colorado. The Mount Emmons Mine, which will cost one billion dollars to develop, may again be the largest private sector investment in Colorado. AMAX had an advantage when it came into Gunnison County because it had a good reputation in Colorado from its work on the Henderson Mine and the Experiment in Ecology that was conducted there. The county, Colorado Department of Natural Resources, and the United States Forest Service serve as the lead agencies at these meetings which are also attended by representatives of other cooperating agencies. AMAX therefore asked ROMCOE, Center for Environmental Problem Solving, to organize a tour of several boom town areas in Colorado and Wyoming.
