Lake and fen sediments are rich archives of information about past environments. Near RMBL, these sediments have the potential to reach back 18,000 years to the Last Glacial Maximum. Through the analysis of pollen grains, charcoal fragments, and sediment geochemistry, the goal of this project is to reconstruct past vegetation communities, fire dynamics, and climate in greater RMBL region. Increased understanding of the impacts of past climate changes on ecosystems provides valuable information that will help land managers better prepare for future conditions.
