Method synopsis

Continuous collection of local weather data at 5-minute intervals throughout growing seasons to capture fine-scale environmental variation affecting disease dynamics.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 18 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — A multi-year case study highlighting the influence of hydrological conditions on epidemic dynamics in a natural plant pathosystem (2025), Oikos. The protocol was originally introduced by Alpine plant spatial clumping modifies leaf surface temperature (2025). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Install weather monitoring stations
High-resolution weather data was collected at each site, sampling in the corner of each site at 5 min intervals for the duration of each growing season, measuring temperature, relative humidity, dew point, leaf moisture, rainfall quantity, soil water content, solar radiation intensity, wind speed and wind direction
Quantities: One weather station per site (4 total)Duration: Continuous 5-minute intervals throughout each growing seasonConditions: All weather conditions monitored
   Equipment: high-resolution weather stations
2. Process weather data
The first and last fifteen minutes of weather data, in addition to aberrant data points resulting from infrequent equipment/software malfunctions, were removed from each site and year. Disease incidence data was collated from weekly epidemiological surveys. Weekly disease depletion rates were calculated using repeated temporal observations of focal plants in each plot
Quantities: All weather data from 4 sites over 5 yearsDuration: Post-season data processingConditions: Laboratory/office conditions
   Equipment: data processing software
